An inmate in the prison of Kaafu atoll Maafushi island suddenly passed away early Thursday.

Maldives Correctional Services’ spokesperson Ahmed Luqman stated that the man, 32, was taken to the Maafushi Prison’s medical centre on Wednesday evening because he was feeling weak.

“His condition wasn’t too poor when we took him to the centre. But he died while we were about to transfer him to (capital) Male this morning,” he explained.

Though MCS did not reveal the identity of the inmate, Mihaaru understands that he was Ibrahim Asgar of Male, who was serving a sentence of 12 years.

Luqman added that the deceased’s body is currently in state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Male.

Eight inmates serving jail sentences have passed away so far this year.
