The current administration has established sewerage systems in 18 islands and water supply networks in 16, proclaimed Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim in Parliament on Monday.

In response to Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz’s inquiry as to when water and sewerage systems will be established in five islands of Thaa atoll, Minister Thoriq stated that projects are already underway to establish sewerage systems in 21 islands and water supply systems in 20 islands. He also announced that establishment of water supply networks in six more islands will soon commence.

According to the minister, factors taken into account under the state policy to establish water and sewerage systems in an island include its population, administrative works, congestion and the state of the island’s water lens. He also noted that sewerage systems had been established in 30 islands and water supply networks in five when President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom first came to power.

“Currently, President Yameen is carrying out more work to establish water and sewerage systems than any other president of the Maldives,” he said, claiming that a project of that magnitude had not been undertaken before in history.

Kinbidhoo MP Riyaz had inquired after the delay in commencing water and sewerage system projects in the islands of Kinbidhoo, Hirilandhoo, Vandhoo, Omadhoo and Kanduhulhudhoo in Thaa atoll. Minister Thoriq replied that the projects will commence once funds are allocated from the State Budget.

The parliament also forwarded President Yameen’s submission to appoint Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM)’s member Mohamed Zahid as the commisson’s deputy to the parliament Committee on Independent Institutions.
