Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) condemned main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s statement denouncing President Yameen’s remarks on corruption.
Speaking at a function to sign membership forms from the islands of Mulah, Dhiggaru, and Madduvari in Meemu atoll, President Yameen had stated, “Corruption is a part of human nature; hence there is a possibility of it happening within this government as well. But every government works to eliminate that possibility.”
Denouncing the remarks of the president, MDP released a statement saying that President Yameen is attempting to make corruption and deceit a minor issue. Accusing the government of holding the biggest corruption scandal in the history of the Maldives, MDP described the president’s remark as horrendous.
However, PPM condemned the statement of MDP, declaring that the party has misinterpreted the president’s remarks.
Speaking at a press conference held Saturday, Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed said that this government has been taking strict actions against any act of corruption.
Azleen accused that such misinterpretations are led as the opponents cannot digest the success of President Yameen’s administration.
