Themaa house in Henveiru ward in capital Male, the former official office of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has been given back to its council member Yumna Maumoon, daughter of former president and PPM leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Owned by a private individual, the house was originally given to Yumna Maumoon to use as an activity hub for PPM. However, in the midst of the ongoing dispute between the party’s leader Gayoom and his half-brother and party adviser, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, which had split the ruling party into two factions, the office was recently locked and all assets, administrative equipment, donations and election forms were taken by President Yameen’s faction to their current activity hub at Dharubaaruge Convention Center.
Yumna declared that as Gayoom is still the leader of PPM, he will commence his work in the building soon. Yumna entered the office accompanied by its owner Shareef and the media to find it completely stripped with the exception of some tables, air conditioners and photographs of Gayoom. The walls of the office were also vandalised with vulgar criticism against Gayoom.
Meanwhile, former foreign minister and Yumna’s twin Dunya Maumoon has said in a tweet that they cannot change the past but can work to mold the future into a better tomorrow.
Speaking to Mihaaru news, she said, “With experience, we know that certain things need to be changed. And to achieve that, we need to work together.”
PPM had collaborated with several other political parties in the 2013 Presidential Elections which had brought President Yameen to power, though none of its former allies are backing the government today. Gayoom’s faction of PPM has now joined forces with Jumhooree Party, the third largest political party in the Maldives, against the current government.
