Police has commenced a probe into some employees of Hulhule Island Hotel (HIH) allegedly threatening a senior staff over the hotel’s discriminatory actions between local and expatriate employees.
HIH management has refused to comment on the issue for the time being while Police is also yet to release a statement.
However, a staff of the five-star hotel operated in Hulhule airport island told Mihaaru late Tuesday that local employees are upset with the management over increasing the salaries of expatriate staff only. The salary raises are to compensate the amount taken from expatriate staff’s incomes as Remittance Tax.
“Additional bonuses are given to all non-Muslim expatriate staff since locals receive Ramadan allowance. Because of so many similar issues, some people called for the general manager’s resignation on [the hotel’s] Viber chat group.”
According to the employee, shortly after the call for their GM’s resignation, Police were summoned to the hotel stating that a threatening note had been put up outside the finance officer’s room. Police officers had inspected the place and separately interrogated the staff.
“The management orchestrated this to stop our actions, to threaten us, because we express our dissatisfaction with them,” declared the employee.
The general manager and finance officer of HIH are both Indian nationals, and the former has served in the position for 13 years.
The employee declared that the hotel management highly discriminates between local and expatriate staff. Employees had brought the matter to the attention of the company’s Board but received no response. The employee added that the matter has also been filed at the authorities.
