Police announced Tuesday that they have found evidence and the identities of the culprits that killed social media activist and blogger Yameen Rasheed earlier this week.

In a press conference, Police stated that they have uncovered information regarding the killers and obtained CCTV footage of two suspects. Deputy Commissioner of Police Abdulla Nawaz stated that Police now have physical evidence while their Intelligence and Crime Department units are questioning more people.

Police revealed a short video of the CCTV footage which depicted a man entering the building in which Yameen Rasheed had lived, and of another man wearing a checked shirt waiting by the staircase of the building. The third scene in the video showed two men riding away from the building on two different motorcycles.

Police released stills of the videos and requested the public to come forward with any information they have on the suspects. They again urged to refrain from spreading rumours or unverified information that could hinder the police investigation.

Yameen Rasheed, 29, of Addu atoll Feydhoo island was found dead with 14 stab wounds by the staircase of his house in capital Male in the early hours of Sunday morning. He had long been writing articles and posts criticising government policies and social issues of the Maldives on social media for which he had received numerous death threats.

Following his violent murder, Maldives Police Service have deployed more officers to keep peace in the capital. Police have also arrested three people in a recent raid but it remains unclear whether the arrests were connected to Yameen’s death.
