A leading power of the nation dominating another power is a violation of the Constitution, declared former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom as he warned of the Maldivian politics’ downfall unless the Constitution is defended.

In a statement released Friday to celebrate Republic Day (November 11), the former president stated that the nation must be ruled in accordance with Constitutional laws and called on state institutions to adhere to the Separation of Powers, which he said is the system supported and brought to power by the public.

“While the Constitution comprises every policy on ruling the nation, it is an obligation of each and every one to maintain and defend the Constitution,” said former president Maumoon.

Reiterating that he has been ousted of his powers as leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) unlawfully, Maumoon declared that such actions are challenges against democracy and all political parties of the Maldives. Thus he called upon all to join forces and defend the Maldivian Constitution and democratic system, stating that failure to do so will send Maldivian politics hurtling down a dark fathomless abyss.

Former president Maumoon also described the people as the greatest treasure in a Republic as they are the source of a nation’s ruling power.

In the midst of the ongoing political feud between Maumoon and his half-brother and incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom which had split PPM into two factions, Maumoon has withdrawn his support for President Yameen’s regime and highly criticised his government and operations of state institutions.
