Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom sought public apology for aiding incumbent President Abdulla Yameen to succeed his administration.
Speaking at the opposition rally held Sunday, he stated that he is saddened by the burden of the blames to be taken by President Yameen’s regime.
He declared that he is distressed that a president elected by a party with good intentions has gone against the beliefs and principles of that party.
Maumoon, who is the half-brother of incumbent President Yameen, received a huge round of applause from the opposition audience as he expressed his apology.
He also stated that Jumhoory Party’s ailing leader, Qasim Ibrahim, is being treated unlawfully as he is denied permission to travel abroad to do some medical scans and tests which cannot be done in the Maldives.
Qasim was first admitted to Medica Hospital on July 16 and he came to know of the travel ban once he travelled to Hulhule airport island. He was taken directly to ADK Hospital afterwards where he is being treated in the ICU.
Qasim is also accused of bribing lawmakers with the state pressing three charges against him regarding the matter.
