A man was arrested from Madduvari island in Raa atoll on Monday after he vandalised a police car and broke its windows.

The police said that the incident occurred last Thursday.

A 41-year-old local was arrested in relation to the incident, the police spokesperson reported.

The man has since been remanded for 15-days, he added.

Whilst vandalism on police property is not frequent in the Maldives, there was an escalation in damaging police property after the controversial transfer of power in 2012, when former president Mohamed Nasheed resigned under duress. In 2012, a police yard in Addu City was torched, and roughly 100 police vehicles were attacked throughout that year.
