Maldives top diplomat calls on Pakistan’s prime minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim on Tuesday called on the Prime Minister of Pakistan Mohamed Nawaz Shareef.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the meeting focused on strengthening the bilateral relations between both countries. No further details were revealed regarding the meeting.

Minister Asim has also met with Maldivian students in Islamabad during his ongoing official visit to Pakistan. The minister inquired after their studies and student life in the country, while the students thanked the minister and the government for maintaining close relations with Pakistan and thus facilitating scholarships in Pakistani schools for Maldivian students.

Furthermore, Minister Asim also met with the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Mr Sartaj Aziz.

During the meeting, Minister Asim expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality extended by the Pakistani government.

According to the Foreign Ministry, both ministers held fruitful discussions on issues of mutual interest in the areas of bilateral and regional cooperation, including the sectors of education, sports, youth and health.

The minister also took note of the state visit by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in 2015, which included signing of key MOUs on Education and Health cooperation between the two allies. The president had also discussed ways to further enhance sector level talks to effectively implement the MOUs.

Minister Asim thanked the Pakistan government for its continuous contribution to the development of the Maldives.

Following the meeting, Adviser Aziz hosted a luncheon in honour of Minister Asim.

Minister Asim was accompanied by Ahmed Saleem, Ambassador of Maldives to Pakistan, Ibrahim Shaheeb, Additional Secretary, Aminath Shabeena, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ahmed Mujthaba, First Secretary at the Embassy of Maldives in Pakistan.
