President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom proclaimed that there is no halt in bringing development to the nation despite dispute among his own ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and antagonism from opposition parties.

He made the remark Monday afternoon while speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate the sewerage system in Meemu atoll Mulah island. President Yameen declared that he came to power not by announcing a war with his opponents but to improve the issues of the country, and that his goal is being accomplished.

“I would not initiate an argument with any person. However, if competitors within my side and opponents try arguing, what needs to be done will be done to prevent any harm to development,” said the president.

He expressed gratitude over completing major projects in Dhiggaru and a number of other islands in the same atoll.

“In this hot hour, the citizens are still smiling and that is what we want to achieve.”

Criticizing Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently living in the United Kingdom under political asylum, President Yameen said it is not acceptable to describe the nation and its state as enemies after becoming self-exiled. Referring to Nasheed’s recent interview to AFP News, he added that if Nasheed wants to serve the people, he needs to accept that no one is above the law.

Stating that the best decision to make for the betterment of the island is to vote for PPM candidates in the upcoming Local Council Elections, President Yameen urged the people of Mulah to give majority of the council to PPM.
