President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has hinted that the King Salman bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia may soon visit the Maldives on an official visit.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new mosque built in Faafu atoll Magoodhoo island, Masjid al-Thaqwa, President Yameen highlighted the strong diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and the Maldives. He noted that several projects to develop mosques are financed by the Saudi Fund for Development.
“We are waiting for the day when we can meet the king once again and welcome him grandly,” said President Yameen.
Should King Salman visit the Maldives, it would be his first official visit as the Saudi monarch. He had previously spent a vacation in the archipelago.
In addition, President Yameen declared that he has no hesitation in saying that many other projects aided by Saudi Arabia have been at halt due to the ongoing political turmoil in the country.
President Yameen also announced that Saudi Arabia has decided to carry out a massive project in Faafu atoll which would open up the atoll to the world, as well as create numerous job opportunities. However, he did not provide further details about the project.
The president urged the people to support the government’s developmental projects as he reiterated his pledge to fulfill the needs of citizens.
