Parliament on Monday approved five of the new cabinet ministers appointed by president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom following a major cabinet reshuffle after named his finance minister Abdulla Jihad as the new vice president in June.

The government controlled parliament approved Dr Mohamed Asim as the foreign minister, Ahmed Munavvar as the finance minister, Zenysha Zaki as the gender minister, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim to the health portfolio and Iruthisham Adam as the sports minister.

Munavvar had been the state finance minister while Nazim was the deputy education minister prior to the shakeup.

Dr Asim who joined the foreign service in 2004 was serving as the High Commissioner of Maldives for Bangladesh prior to his appointment as the country’s top diplomat.
