The President’s Office on Wednesday introduced passport cards for the first time in the Maldives.

Maldives Immigration proclaimed that the Maldivian passport card is the first one in the world that can be used for business transactions.

The passport card can be used for both international and domestic travels. Passport card holders will also have access to the services of Bank of Maldives Ltd (BML), MasterCard and Allied Insurance, marking another first in the world.

The first Maldivian passport card was presented to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Immigrations’ Controller Mohamed Anwar declared that the passport cards have strong security features. Highlighting that the cards are the first that can be used for money transfers, he said that the cards are made from the same polycarbonate material used in passport databases.

“Including money transfer feature in a passport card is a difficult process. No other passport cards in the world were made with these features; hence, this is a great privilege for the Maldives,” said Anwar.

He proudly declared that Immigration has proven that identification documents can be used for online business transactions and money transfers.

Further acknowledging the efforts laid by Immigration to enhance its services over the past two years, Anwar noted that the department has introduced several new services including the second generation passport and automated gates for immigration clearance.

The Maldivian passport card will be released to the public in two weeks. An official of Immigration said that its price rates will be announced in advance.
