The Elections Commission on Tuesday proclaimed that the upcoming Local Council Election’s voters list is in accordance to the guidelines of the Supreme Court after opposition political parties raised objections.
The guideline produced in 2013 states that voting centres should use voters lists that have been signed by all the candidates.
Opposition Jumhoory Party(JP) and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have declined to sign the list, claiming that the voters list contradicts the guidelines of the Supreme Court. MDP claims that the list provided to the party does not include ID numbers of the voters while JP claims that they were given three different voters lists.
However, member of Elections Commission Ahmed Akram said on Tuesday that the list follows the guidelines of the Supreme Court and would not have any issues.
“All conditions of the guidelines will be contented in the list,” said Akram.
The Elections Commission displayed the lists to the local press. The lists include the names, ID numbers, addresses and pictures of the voters.
Akram added that the opportunity to sign the lists is yet open and reiterated that the election will be held on May 6 as scheduled.
