Kandima Maldives launched its first ever KULA Art Festival late last month, inviting local talents and guests to channel their inner Picasso ahead of the resort’s year-end celebrations.

The KULA Art Festival, which is a key element of Kandima’s ambitious Art Initiative, was the first large scale event of its kind to be hosted by a resort in the Maldives.

The resort extended invitations to over 20 local artists to take part in the festivities and show off the talents of Maldivians as they held live art demonstrations across a varied range of mediums, including acrylic, crafts, coffee, digital, henna and spray paint. Along with classes for guests to discover and exhibit their own skills, the festival also showcased artworks by local talents, providing a platform for established and promising artists to gain international exposure.

The celebrations also included a variety of other activities, including beach games, live entertainment, cuisine and, finally, the KULA colour run which was literally the most colourful event of the festival. Kandima’s staff and guests, both young and old, competed in a fun and friendly game, racing across a beach trail through clouds of pink, yellow, green and blue powder to the finish line, bringing the festivities to an end.

Kandima Maldives launched its KULA (local language for ‘colour’) initiative on October 5, 2017. According to the resort, the programme looks to “promote and nurture local artistic talent and creativity” and “open up new horizons for the local art community like never before.”
