An India cargo vessel ran aground a reef near Lhaviyani Atoll Kuredhoo island.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said the vessel ran aground en-route to the capital Male.

Efforts are underway to re-float the vessel but the damage to the reef is yet to be determined, MNDF said adding that there was a seven member crew aboard.

The vessel had reportedly unloaded in Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuffushi island before leaving for Male.

A Vietnamese vessel which ran aground in Fuvahmulah in August was fined over MVR633 million for damage to the reef.
