The Maldives government has decided to dismiss Zahiya Zareer from her position as the Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka.

Mihaaru understands that Zahiya has been notified of the decision and is currently making preparations to return to the Maldives early next week.

It remains unclear why Zahiya is being removed from post or whom the government will appoint as her replacement. However, sources indicate that the recently appointed Maldivian Ambassador to Japan Mohamed Hussain Shareef might be switched to Sri Lanka.

While Sri Lanka is currently the residing place of several senior officials of the opposition, convicted former President Mohamed Nasheed has also been in Sri Lanka for around a month now, where opposition members have been conducting activities.

A popular destination for vacation as well as medical treatment for Maldivians, Sri Lanka was also where main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) unofficially commenced activities in 2003.

Zahiya Zareer was appointed as Ambassador to Sri Lanka in May 2014.

She had also served as a minister from 2005-2008 during the regime of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom with most of her years in government spent in the education sector.
