The German ambassador to the Maldives, Joern Rohde, met with the Maldivian opposition this week.
During his visit to the Maldives, he met with main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ’s leading members on Tuesday, and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on Wednesday.
“We discussed our concerns about political developments in Maldives. Maldives and Germany are great friends,” said Maumoon in a tweet referring to the meeting.
This meeting took place in the wake of Maumoon’s security being tightened by Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) after allegedly receiving intelligence reports about threats. However, Maumoon said that he was unaware of any such threats and has requested the defence ministry to give details on the matter.
The German ambassador, who is assessing the political situation of the country, met with Indian ambassador Akhilesh Mishra as well.
