Former local actor Ali Ahmed was found dead late Monday after overdosing on drugs.
Popularly known as Ayya of television show “Hatharu Udhares”, he was found in a room of Garden Beauty house in Henveiru ward of capital Male to which he had shifted a week ago, according to a close friend of his.
“He went to a nearby shop to buy some medicine [on Sunday night], saying that he has fever and aches,” said a neighbour, adding that Ali had also been seen in the area with a group of people that night.
According to his death certificate, Ali had died of an overdose. Police took samples from his remains and his funeral took place on Monday night.
After a long career in several local films and music videos, Ali Ahmed had disappeared from the acting scene temporarily before announcing plans for a comeback late 2016. Prior to his death, he had also been charged last month with smuggling drugs into the Maldives.
It remains unclear when or how much drugs Ali had allegedly smuggled. According to sources, he was arrested last year and he had been in detention since.
