Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s Deputy Leader and Lawmaker of Fonadhoo Constituency, Abdul Raheem Abdulla proclaimed that every amendment and bill were passed by the parliament as per the government’s wish.

Abdul Raheem made the remark while speaking at the rally held at Alimas Carnival in capital Male to celebrate the three years of the current government. In his speech, he defended the new taxes being introduced. Abdul Raheem said that development could only be brought about by the joint efforts of the government and citizens. Adding that several other states who charge bigger taxes still fail to give the service being provided by the Maldives, he stressed that nobody could break the PPM Parliamentary Group, and that they will continue their efforts to bring more benefits and profit to the nation.

“Over the past years, we have passed every bill and amendment as per the government’s wish to fulfill the Manifesto and pledges of the government.”

He also assured that the parliament will give the full cooperation given within the Constitution to run the government.

“Hence if a new law is required or if it has to be changed, we will do that,” said Abdul Raheem.

Referring to the tax system, Abdul Raheem said that the public needs to accept the new taxes as it would only make the future better. Taking Singapore as an example, he cited that fines are charged if people spit on the road, and such is how the countries developed.

Meanwhile, with heavy disparagement the parliament has passed to take Airport Development Charge (ADC) from Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA). Therefore starting from next year, USD 12 will be taken from locals and USD 25 will be taken from foreigners. This amounts total USD 24 from locals and USD 50 from foreigners, taking the Airport Service Charge of USD 12 from locals and USD 25 from foreigners already charged at INIA.
