The Election Commission refuted the statement published by main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) over sacking several names as Observers and Monitors of the upcoming Local Council Elections.

Accusing the EC of taking away the freedom and impartiality of the Local Council Elections, MDP had declared in a statement that the Elections Commission has tried to influence the applications of observers in various methods.

MDP said that though the application forms of observers and monitors were supposed to be applied online, EC’s server was busy by the end of deadline and they were unable to submit the forms.

However, refuting MDP’s allegations, EC said that they have been meeting with political parties regularly and they have extended several deadlines for the convenience of the parties.

Also due to the issues in server, EC has informed all parties that the forms will be accepted directly at EC five days prior to the deadline.

EC has condemned the statement of MDP which gives misinformation about the commission. EC also urged to prevent any such action which may create a wrong image of the commission ahead of a big election.
