The Criminal Court on Thursday permitted lawyer Hisaan Hussain of Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim’s legal team to attend his hearings after she apologised for her previous comments regarding the court.
The court had banned Hisaan from attending the first hearing of Qasim’s three-charge trial early Thursday over the comments she had made in a press conference held Wednesday regarding Qasim’s arrest and trials.
Hisaan had said that she expected to see another ‘dilemma’ being issued by the court. She meant that an order would be issued to remand him until the end of his trial, subsequently prompting the court to ban her from the hearing saying that her comments compromised the court’s image and integrity among the public.
“I told them that was never my intention and that I, as a rule, respect the courts and judges. They accepted my apology and allowed me to resume as an advocate,” she said.
The other lawyers of Qasim Ibrahim’s legal team also thanked the Criminal Court for accepting Hisaan Hussain’s apology.
In the first hearing of Qasim’s three-charge trials that began behind closed doors, the state requested a court order to remand Qasim until the end of his hearings. After statements from the prosecution and defence, Judge Adam Arif ruled that there was no call to keep Qasim under custody and declined to issue a remand.
The famous local tycoon and lawmaker of Maamigili constituency is charged with attempted bribery, coercion with regards to official duties and undue influence on voters. However, Qasim has denied all three charges.
