Member of Male City Council and lawmaker of Medhu Henveiru Constituency, Zaidul Ameen, has been remanded for another fifteen days after he was arrested over a case of alleged blackmail.
His lawyer, Ahmed Mahfooz, said in cryptic statement that Ameen was arrested in connection to a case currently under investigation by the police. He did not elaborate further.
According to Mahfooz, Police had taken Ameen’s statement and confiscated his mobile phone.
Zaidul Ameen is a member of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and was formerly on its council. Following the political fall-out between PPM’s leader, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and its advisor, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, which had split the ruling party into two factions, Ameen sided with leader Maumoon and has since been criticising President Yameen’s administration.
